Lil Mama is making big moves. The “Lip Gloss” rapper has just landed a role as Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes in the upcoming TLC biopic for VH1.
MC Lyte revealed the news at the inaugural VIBE Impact Awards. “I don’t know if I’m supposed to say, but I will,” Lyte told Hip Hollywood. “She just got the role as Left Eye in TLC’s new movie. I am so excited for her.”
The film is currently in pre-production, with the group’s two surviving members, Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas, serving as consultants and executive producers.
The hip-hop pioneer plans to take the 23-year-old under her wing. “I’m gonna put a little bit of my concentration and focus on helping to uplift a sister who is talented, smart, witty, and just had her chances cut too short, and that’s Lil Mama ’cause she is a talented young lady,” explained Lyte.
The two plan to hit the studio this weekend. “We’re working on a hip-hop sisters record,” she said. “I’ll be doing songs with her, with [Lady of] Rage. Monie [Love] will do a song with Yo-Yo. We’re gonna mix it up. It’s gonna be nice.”
The made-for-TV movie series will explore the Grammy-winning trio’s rise to fame with their 1991 debut Ooooooohhh… On the TLC Tip and 1994’s groundbreaking album CrazySexyCool, which sold more than 22 million albums worldwide and made them one of the most successful female groups of all time.
Fans will also relive darker moments from the group’s storied career including T-Boz’s battle with sickle-cell anemia, the ladies’ financial woes, Left Eye burning down her boyfriend’s home, and her tragic death in 2002.
Uhm… no. Let me say it now. I give much respect to Lil Mama for making a name for herself of having a pretty mundane career of being relatively obscure, but popping up in the most odd or inopportune moments.
She broke on to the scene with a horrid set of Hip Hop records, “G Slide” and “Lip Gloss”.
Most notably at the 2009 VMAs where she crashed the stage during the Jay-Z/Alicia Keys performance of “Empire State of Mind”. Quite frankly, it was probably one of the more uncomfortable moments because you could see Jay-Z was backing up like “What the f…. why… why are you here… and who are you?” His comments after the show pretty much confirmed what we all knew… she may be from Brooklyn too, but that the closest to a collabo she will EVER get with him or Keys.
Then there was the Charlemagne and The Breakfast Club interview on Power 105.1 where she claimed that Nicki Minaj stole her look and style (which she actually MAY have a legit claim on) and proceeded to bust out the tears later in the interview talking about her mom’s health issues.
On a positive note, she was actually REALLY good at her job as one of the judges on Randy Jackson’s Americas Best Dance Crew for seven seasons with JC Chavez of N’Sync fame, Shane (in jail for some pedophile stuff) Sparks, Omarion and D-Trix (Season 3 winner). She was in her element and actually gave some of the best critiques from street dancers in the business.
With all that said, I will be watching closely to see if this bio pic is even worth watching. I was never the biggest TLC fan to begin with, but I respected their hustle and even felt bad for them as they were the best selling girl group of their day, selling millions of records and got a check for peanuts at the end of the day. On top of that, between T-Boz’s illness and the death of Left Eye in Honduras this stellar group just seemed doomed for tragedy. Which is why a bio pic seems all the more tantalizing, but so far I’m already one foot out the door with 1/3rd of the cast being announced. What’s next…. Sanaa Lathan as Chili and New York (from Flavor of Love) as T-Boz?
Okay… I went too far with that last one. Sorry.
